Balyasny Asset Management has hired the former head of equities for Asia-Pacific at Deutsche Bank, according to a person familiar with the matter. The move adds a seasoned veteran to the hedge fund's regional trading operations.
New Hire Brings Deep Asia Expertise
Danny Yong, who previously led Deutsche Bank's equities business across Asia-Pacific, has joined Balyasny as a portfolio manager. He will be based in Singapore and focus on Asian equity markets, the person said, asking not to be identified because the details are private.
Yong spent more than two decades at Deutsche Bank, rising through the ranks to become head of equities for the region. His departure from the German lender was announced earlier this year as part of a broader reshuffle in its Asia-Pacific operations.
Balyasny Expands Asia Presence
The hiring underscores Balyasny's commitment to expanding its footprint in Asia, where it manages a growing portion of its $19 billion in assets. The firm has been actively recruiting portfolio managers and analysts to capitalize on trading opportunities in the region.
Balyasny, founded by Dmitry Balyasny in 2001, operates a multi-manager model similar to rivals like Millennium and Point72. The model allows individual portfolio managers to trade with the firm's capital while sharing risk management infrastructure.
Industry Context and Impact
The appointment comes amid a wave of senior moves in the hedge fund industry, as firms compete for talent with deep regional knowledge. According to a recent survey by executive search firm Options Group, compensation for senior portfolio managers in Asia has risen by 15% year-over-year.
Yong's experience in Asian equities, particularly in markets like China and India, is expected to bolster Balyasny's ability to generate alpha in these fast-growing economies. The firm already runs several Asia-focused funds, and Yong will likely contribute to its discretionary long/short equity strategies.
Neither Balyasny nor Deutsche Bank commented on the move. The person familiar with the hire said Yong has already started in his new role.
