Jonas Vingegaard stunned Tadej Pogacar by taking the first yellow jersey of the 2026 Tour de France after his Visma-Lease a Bike team won the opening stage, a 19.6km team time trial through Barcelona. The Danish rider, winner of this year's Giro d'Italia and Tour champion in 2022 and 2023, beat defending champion Pogacar by 12 seconds on the Montjuic finish.
Vingegaard's emotional return to yellow
“It feels amazing to have the yellow jersey again,” Vingegaard said. “It’s been three years and it’s one of the most beautiful jerseys in cycling. It’s the perfect start for our race.” The stage also saw Filippo Ganna of Netcompany-Ineos come within eight seconds of taking yellow, while French hope Paul Seixas and Remco Evenepoel showed strong form.
Ineos near miss and puncture drama
Netcompany-Ineos were fastest through all checkpoints until Kevin Vauquelin suffered a puncture approaching Montjuic, losing a minute. Leadership passed to Ganna, who powered up the final 800m to set a time that stood until Vingegaard's team beat it. Evenepoel, riding a prototype bike with a 68-tooth gear, had high hopes but Florian Lipowitz struggled in the final two kilometres.
New team time trial rules shake up standings
Changes to team time trial rules allow squads to lose all but one rider while individual times count toward the general classification. This revision aims to disrupt top teams like Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates XRG. With Pogacar now 12 seconds behind, the tactic appears to have worked.
Wildfires threaten race progression
High temperatures above 40°C and gusting winds are fueling wildfires in northern Catalonia and near the French border. Over 2,000 firefighters are battling blazes along France's Mediterranean coast, and Perpignan airport has closed. Monday's third stage heads north into France's Pyrénées-Orientales département, finishing in Les Angles.
