Budget Airlines Expand Regional UK Flight Options
For travelers outside London, accessing affordable and convenient flights has often been challenging. However, major budget airlines Ryanair and easyJet are transforming this landscape with significant route expansions from regional UK airports. These new services offer direct connections to popular European destinations, providing more choices for holidaymakers across the country.
Glasgow to Lisbon: Easy Access to Portugal
Scottish travelers now have enhanced access to Portugal's vibrant capital through easyJet's new direct route from Glasgow to Lisbon. Flights are available from just £39.99, operating on Wednesdays and Sundays. Lisbon offers visitors cobbled streets, historic trams, famous Fado music, and delicious pastel de nata pastries.
Kevin Doyle, easyJet's UK country manager, emphasized the airline's commitment to expanding choice and value across its Scottish network. Jonathan Ford of AGS Airports highlighted this route as an exciting opportunity that supports both tourism and business connections for western Scotland.
Newcastle's Four New Destinations
Ryanair has announced four new routes from Newcastle Airport following substantial investment: Malta, Budapest, Marrakesh, and Brussels. The airline has added a third aircraft at Newcastle to accommodate increased demand, with promotional fares starting at £29.99 during limited seat sales.
Leon McQuaid, Newcastle Airport's aviation development director, noted strong passenger demand driving these expansions. Travelers can explore Malta's Blue Lagoon, Budapest's thermal baths and ruin pubs, Marrakesh's historic Medina, or Brussels' UNESCO-listed Grand-Place square.
Ryanair's communications director Jade Kirwan confirmed that the new aircraft will also increase frequencies on seven existing routes including Barcelona, Faro, Krakow, and Malaga.
Manchester Adds Spanish and Italian Routes
Ryanair is deploying its 19th aircraft at Manchester Airport for summer 2026, creating over 540,000 additional seats. New destinations include Castellón de la Plana in Spain's Valencia region and Rimini on Italy's Adriatic coast.
Castellón offers Mediterranean beaches, 16th-century landmarks like El Fadrí, and the Gothic Santa María Cathedral. The route launches June 1 with twice-weekly flights from £14.99. Rimini features 15km of sandy beaches and Roman historical sites, with flights starting June 3 from approximately £25.
Birmingham Expands to Five New Cities
Birmingham Airport welcomes five new Ryanair routes to Morocco, Italy, Albania, and Poland. The airline's ninth aircraft at the airport will provide over 424,000 additional seats, with promotional fares available from £29.99.
Destinations include Agadir (Morocco's "Miami" with 10km beaches), Rome (Italy's historic capital), Tirana (Albania's emerging capital), and Warsaw (Poland's reconstructed Old Town). These routes launched in March and April, offering diverse cultural and leisure experiences.
These expansions demonstrate budget airlines' growing focus on regional UK airports, providing travelers with more affordable options and reducing reliance on London-based flights. With millions of passengers expected in 2026, these new routes promise to make European travel more accessible for UK residents nationwide.
