Qantas Project Sunrise: World's Longest Direct Flight Set for 2027 Takeoff
Qantas, Australia's national airline, is on the brink of launching the world's longest direct flight, a groundbreaking 22-hour journey from London to Sydney. Dubbed Project Sunrise, this initiative aims to revolutionize long-haul travel by eliminating stopovers and introducing innovative passenger comforts. With test flights underway and the first aircraft under construction at Airbus's Toulouse factory, Qantas confirms all major components, including the fuselage, wings, and engines, are now fitted, keeping the project on track for its 2027 debut.
Redefining Aviation with Endurance and Luxury
Announced in 2017, Project Sunrise targets what Qantas calls the "final frontier of aviation"—direct flights from Australia's east coast to major global hubs like London Heathrow and New York's JFK Airport. In May 2022, the airline ordered 12 Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, designed specifically for endurance over volume. Passengers can choose from a range of seating options, including Premium Economy, Economy, and ultra-luxurious Business Class and First Class suites, ensuring comfort across the marathon journey.
A standout feature is the Wellbeing Zone, accessible to all travelers. Qantas describes this as a dedicated space for movement, offering guided wellness content and healthy refreshments to help passengers stay active and refreshed during the extended flight. Additionally, the airline is tackling jet lag head-on with 12 automated lighting scenes, such as "sunrise" and "sunset," programmed to sync with destination time zones and aid circadian rhythm adjustment.
Launch Timeline and Pricing Insights
Qantas plans to deliver the first Project Sunrise aircraft by the end of 2026, with commercial flights scheduled to commence in the first half of 2027. CEO Vanessa Hudson has indicated that fares for these direct routes will be approximately 20% higher than existing flights, which typically include refueling stops. For comparison, current British Airways economy flights from London Heathrow to Sydney, with a layover in Singapore, range from £721 to £1,278, highlighting the premium for non-stop convenience.
Expanding Routes and Current Long-Haul Records
While the London Heathrow to Sydney route is set to be the inaugural Project Sunrise flight, Qantas will also operate direct 22-hour flights between Australia's east coast and New York's JFK Airport. This expansion underscores the airline's commitment to connecting key global destinations without interruptions. Currently, the world's longest direct flight is operated by Singapore Airlines, covering 9,537 miles from Singapore to New York in 18.5 hours, with economy fares around £686. Project Sunrise will surpass this, covering 10,573 miles and setting a new benchmark in aviation endurance.
As Qantas advances toward the 2027 launch, Project Sunrise promises to transform long-haul travel by combining record-breaking flight times with enhanced passenger well-being, marking a significant leap forward in global connectivity.
