The incident involved Turkish Airlines flight TK1853, an Airbus A321 travelling from Istanbul to Barcelona. According to flight tracking data, the pilots transmitted a specific emergency code shortly after passing the Italian island of Sardinia. In response to the alert, Spanish and French military aircraft were scrambled to intercept and escort the civilian airliner.
