A senior Indian politician has been killed in a devastating plane crash in western India, with all five people on board the private aircraft confirmed dead. Ajit Pawar, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra state, was travelling from Mumbai to his home city of Baramati when the mid-size Learjet 45 went down.

No Survivors in Fatal Incident

There were no survivors from the crash, which occurred approximately 159 miles from Mumbai. The aircraft slammed into an open field and burst into flames, with witnesses reporting multiple explosions following the initial impact. The reason for the crash remains unknown at this early stage, with investigations expected to follow.

Key Political Figure Lost

Mr Pawar, aged 66, was a significant figure in Maharashtra politics as the state's second-highest elected official. He was travelling to campaign in a local election at the time of the fatal incident. As part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling coalition, he held considerable influence in the state's sugar belt and was renowned for his ability to mobilise rural voters effectively.

Prime Minister's Tribute

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tribute to his political ally, describing Mr Pawar as a "widely respected" and "hardworking personality" in a social media post. He highlighted the politician's administrative understanding and passion for empowering marginalised communities, calling his untimely demise "very shocking and saddening."

In a subsequent message, Mr Modi expressed sadness for all victims and offered condolences to bereaved families, wishing them "strength and courage" during this difficult time.

Other Victims Identified

Alongside Mr Pawar, the crash claimed the lives of two of his staff members and two crew members, according to statements from India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Indian political circles and the wider community, with tributes pouring in for the influential politician and his fellow victims.
