Ford has unveiled its new all-electric Explorer SUV, a family-focused crossover set to hit the market in 2024. The Explorer EV marks Ford's entry into the mainstream electric SUV segment, offering a spacious interior, advanced technology, and a targeted driving range of up to 300 miles.
Design and Dimensions
The Explorer EV adopts a modern, aerodynamic design language distinct from its combustion-engine predecessor. It features a sleek front end with a closed grille, slim LED headlights, and a sculpted bonnet. The silhouette is coupe-like, with a sloping roofline that enhances aerodynamics. The vehicle measures approximately 4.5 meters in length, making it slightly shorter than the current Explorer but with a similar wheelbase for interior space.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the Explorer EV boasts a minimalist cabin with a 15-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen running Ford's latest SYNC 4 system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. A 12-inch digital instrument cluster provides driver information. The seats are upholstered in recycled materials, and the rear seats offer ample legroom for three adults. The boot capacity is 450 liters, expandable to 1,400 liters with the rear seats folded.
Powertrain and Range
The Explorer EV is built on Ford's new electric vehicle architecture, shared with Volkswagen's MEB platform. It will be available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The base model features a 52 kWh battery producing 168 hp, while the long-range version uses a 77 kWh battery with 282 hp. The 77 kWh battery provides a WLTP range of up to 300 miles. Fast charging at 125 kW allows a 10-80% charge in 25 minutes.
Safety and Assistance
Standard safety features include autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree camera system. Optional driver assistance packages offer semi-autonomous driving capabilities on highways.
Pricing and Availability
Ford has not yet announced official prices, but the Explorer EV is expected to start from around £40,000 in the UK. Production will begin in early 2024 at Ford's Cologne plant in Germany, with first deliveries expected in the summer of 2024. The Explorer EV will compete with the Tesla Model Y, Volkswagen ID.4, and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
