First Direct UK Flights to Zanzibar and Tanzania Set for 2027 Launch
Direct UK Flights to Zanzibar and Tanzania by 2027

Air Tanzania, the flag carrier of Tanzania, has announced plans to launch the first-ever direct flights between the United Kingdom and the East African nation. The new route, expected to commence by July 2027, will connect London Gatwick to Kilimanjaro International Airport, with additional direct services to Zanzibar. This marks a significant milestone for travelers seeking easier access to the 'backpackers' Maldives' and the iconic Serengeti.

Route Details and Fleet Expansion

The initial schedule will include a minimum of three weekly flights. To support this expansion, Air Tanzania plans to acquire eight new aircraft over the next five years. Peter Ulanga, CEO of Air Tanzania, expressed confidence in meeting the 2027 deadline, emphasizing the airline's commitment to enhancing tourism potential from the UK.

Zanzibar: A Key Market

Tim Henshall, Head of Tourism Marketing for Tanzania in the UK, confirmed that direct flights to Zanzibar are highly likely. He highlighted Zanzibar's popularity among British travelers and noted that existing routes from Frankfurt and Amsterdam have performed exceptionally well. Henshall believes that a direct link will significantly boost visitor numbers.

Addressing Overtourism Concerns

While tourism is vital to Zanzibar's economy, concerns about overtourism and environmental impact have been raised. In 2025, the archipelago welcomed a record 917,167 international tourists. However, Henshall argues that overtourism is not yet an issue, pointing to less-developed islands like Pemba and Mafia Island. He encourages travelers to explore beyond hotspots such as Stone Town, Paje, Nungwi, and Kendwa.

Environmental Challenges

Rapid hotel construction and plastic pollution threaten Zanzibar's natural habitats. During a visit, evidence of half-built hotels along the coast was observed. However, initiatives like Chumbe Island's shoulder-season discounts aim to promote sustainable tourism.

The new flights are expected to provide a significant boost to Tanzania's tourism industry, offering UK travelers a more convenient gateway to the region's spectacular landscapes and cultural heritage.
