Will Ferrell made a surprise appearance at a packed New York bar to celebrate the USA team's World Cup victory, belting out Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline to starstruck fans. The 58-year-old comedian was filmed walking through the crowd at Brass Monkey pub in the Meatpacking District, where revellers were celebrating the Americans' 2-0 win over Australia, securing their spot in the knockout stages.
Dressed as his Netflix character
Ferrell was dressed as his character Lonnie Hawkins from the upcoming Netflix comedy golf series The Hawk, which premieres next month. He wore a visor with the word 'Hawk' across the front and began chanting 'Hawk, hawk, hawk', prompting the crowd of World Cup supporters to join in, as seen in social media videos.
Promotional campaign for The Hawk
The pub appearance was part of a promotional campaign for the series. According to Netflix's synopsis, Hawkins is a former top golfer from 2004 who struggles to recapture his glory decades later. 'His body says retire, but his heart says he's not done yet,' the synopsis reads. 'His ex-wife and his son Lance, golf's new golden boy, know he's through. But with one more major to win to complete golf's Grand Slam, Lonnie refuses to believe he's anything other than one stroke away from the greatest comeback in golf history.'
World Cup ambassador role
Ferrell is also serving as a Los Angeles ambassador for the World Cup, a role he jokingly described as 'awful' during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show. 'I thought it was gonna be great. I gotta mow the field. I don't even get a riding mower. I have a manual push mower and it's like painting the Golden Gate Bridge: once I start on one side, I gotta start on the other. I'm just there all the time,' he quipped. 'I'm having to wash the uniforms. In fact, I got a duffle bag full of the New Zealand guys' jock straps and… Very hairy men, the Kiwis. A thatch of pubic hair down there…'
