Additional decorations may include personalized messages such as the baby’s due date, chosen name, or phrases like “coming soon.” At Cake Box, some customers have requested designs featuring clouds, stars, teddy bears, and even the baby’s heartbeat.
Surge in Demand
The egg-free bakery chain, which operates over 300 locations across the UK, has reported a significant increase in orders for ultrasound cakes over the past year. Sukh Chamdal, CEO of Cake Box, told Metro: “Customers are increasingly looking for cakes that mark important life moments, and pregnancy milestones have become one of those occasions.” He added: “For many parents, the first scan is one of the most emotional and memorable moments of a pregnancy, and the cake becomes a way to celebrate that and share the milestone with friends and family.”
Chamdal noted that some customers use ultrasound cakes as pregnancy announcements, while others order them for baby showers or to mark scan appointments. He described a “ritual element” similar to gender reveal parties, with some families combining the ultrasound design with a gender reveal element.
Social Media Popularity
Social media platforms have helped popularize the trend, with parents sharing videos and photos of their ultrasound cakes online. On TikTok, dozens of videos showcase the cakes, some featuring a “burn to reveal” design that also discloses the baby’s gender. Comments praise the cakes as “so cute,” “beautiful,” and “amazing,” with many viewers saying they “love the idea.”
Pricing and Availability
At Cake Box, ultrasound cakes start at £27.99 for a six-inch Victoria sponge base. Prices increase for larger cakes and chocolate sponge options; the most expensive is a 12-inch round chocolate cake serving 18 people, costing £68.99. When ordering online, customers can choose a hidden color for a gender reveal and upload a scan photo for the decorating process.
