The Bear season 5 premieres on Disney Plus on June 26, 2026, and the eight-episode final season (seven reviewed) picks up the day after the previous season ended. Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) has quit but remains in the kitchen, while Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) leads with jittery uncertainty. Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) copes by naming objects, and Uncle Jimmy (Oliver Platt) is so broke he pawns watches and tries to sell air rights above The Bear. Chicago is battered by a biblical thunderstorm, the restaurant has a busted tap, and flooding ensues. The season focuses on a single night's service, overbooked due to a reservations app glitch, with insufficient food to cover customers.
First Half Lacks Dynamism
The first four episodes are a slog, lacking dynamism. Conversations repeatedly cycle through one person expressing perseverance while the other pours cold water on it. The repeated use of 'heard' as a catch-all response becomes cringey. The Faks are overused, with 'annoying' being a top search suggestion for the characters. The scrappiness of season one and unpredictability of season two are sorely missed. Without a review assignment, the author would have abandoned the season.
Second Half Delivers Classic Bear Magic
When service finally begins, the show transforms into the chaotic, heartwarming thrill that defined its early success. The second half is the best The Bear has been in years, with genuine laugh-out-loud moments. Constructive criticism from recent seasons appears addressed: most episodes run a tight sub-30 minutes, braggadocious cameos are eliminated, and random side quests and romantic entanglements (Claire is never mentioned) are absent. Fan service excels, with nods to Original Berf shirts, 'yes, chef' ubiquity, and Carmy-Sydney soulmate theories.
Core Cast Shines in Final Season
The Carmy, Sydney, and Richie trifecta remains strong, though Carmy's melancholy nothingness wears thin. Supporting cast members, including Will Poulter and Jamie Lee Curtis, get tiny, beautiful moments of revelation. Neil Fak (Matty Matheson) works surprisingly well, and Tina (Liza Colón-Zayas) delivers the best arc. The author nearly whooped with joy at the tight runtime, with exceptions that justify themselves.
Verdict: A Meal Worth Finishing
The appetiser leaves something to be desired, but dessert is delicious. The back half justifies powering through the sluggish front. Sydney's line, 'Let's finish strong,' when solving a stove failure, encapsulates the hope for the series finale. The Bear season 5 streams on Disney Plus from June 26, 2026.
