Dramatic images have emerged of a massive fire at a scrap yard in South East London, where approximately 100 tonnes of scrap metal went up in flames. The blaze broke out on Wednesday, June 17, at an industrial estate on Landau Way, Erith, near the banks of the River Thames.
Firefighters Battle Blaze
Around 70 firefighters and ten fire engines were deployed to tackle the inferno. Despite the scale of the fire, no injuries were reported. Thick plumes of smoke could be seen from the opposite side of the Thames, prompting authorities to advise local residents to keep windows and doors closed as crews worked into the evening to extinguish remaining hot spots.
Specialist Equipment Used
The London Fire Brigade utilised specialist equipment, including two water bowsers, a high volume pump, and a 32-metre turntable ladder to fight the flames from above. A water relay system was set up between the incident site and the nearest hydrant, ensuring a constant water supply. The brigade's drone team also provided the Incident Commander with real-time situational awareness.
Crews collaborated with on-site staff, using machinery to safely remove waste and turn over scrap metal to extinguish deep-seated fires. The first of seven emergency calls was received at 10:50, with firefighters from Erith, Bexley, Plumstead, and surrounding stations responding. Additional support came from Kent Fire & Rescue Service and Essex County Fire & Rescue Service. The fire was brought under control by 17:13.
