Pasta Brand Aims to Capture Dinner Table Conversations with Special Recording Device
In an unusual move blending food marketing with audio preservation, Prego pasta sauce has announced a device specifically designed to record intimate family dinner conversations. The Campbell's-owned brand revealed plans for a limited-release voice recorder shaped like a pasta sauce jar lid that consumers can place directly on their dining tables.
The 'Connection Keeper' Device and Its Simple Operation
Priced at $20, the 'Connection Keeper' features surprisingly basic technology for our increasingly connected world. The device contains no WiFi, Bluetooth, cloud connectivity, or artificial intelligence features. Users simply press a button to activate two built-in microphones, then press again to stop recording.
All conversations are stored locally on a 16GB microSD card within the device. From May 4, users can upload recordings to StoryCorps' encrypted online portal, which Prego claims offers 'full privacy controls' though specific details remain unspecified.
Partnership with StoryCorps and Archival Opportunities
The collaboration with nonprofit organization StoryCorps represents a significant aspect of this initiative. StoryCorps has spent years recording ordinary Americans' stories, with selected interviews airing on NPR and archived on their website.
Elyce Henkin, managing director of StoryCorps studios and brand partnerships, explained to Wired magazine: 'Everything is AI these days. It interrupts the conversation and the flow. We wanted to get rid of that and go back to the basics and have everyone talking to each other.'
Participants will have the option to contribute their dinner conversations to the StoryCorps collection at the Library of Congress, creating a potential historical archive of contemporary family interactions.
Limited Availability and Package Contents
Prego plans extremely limited production, with only about 100 devices scheduled for release. Available for purchase starting April 27, each package includes the Connection Keeper device, Prego Traditional Pasta Sauce with other meal essentials, and a conversation prompt card deck designed to stimulate meaningful dinner discussions.
The company's website statement emphasizes: 'We live in a world that captures everything. Photos. Videos. Messages. Moments made for sharing. But the place where real connection still happens – the dinner table – is often left behind. Prego believes the everyday moments and connections built around the dinner table matter.'
Context and Research Behind the Initiative
This unusual product arrives amid research findings that approximately one-third of families eat meals in silence. The coronavirus pandemic forced many households back to shared dining experiences, potentially creating renewed interest in capturing these moments.
Campbell's, Prego's parent company, has been approached for additional comment regarding the marketing strategy and privacy considerations surrounding the recording device. The product raises questions about what constitutes appropriate dinner conversation preservation versus potential privacy intrusions during family meals.
