In response to an opinion piece on "carspreading" published on 12 July, John Pye of Southampton writes that he and his wife live in a neighbourhood of houses built just before the Second World War. They have watched in horror as models of their favoured cars have increased in size. Having chosen to keep their Mini Cooper and VW Polo, both of 2016 vintage, they believe they are the only people in the locality who store both cars in the garage overnight.
Interregnum vs Regency
Peter Wrigley of Birstall, West Yorkshire, corrects a crossword solution. He notes that a "period between reigns" (Quick crossword, 13 July) is an interregnum, not a regency. A regency occurs when a monarch is deemed incapable of carrying out duties and they are taken over by a regent.
Thames Water's True Service
Patrick Cunningham of Kingston upon Thames, London, takes issue with a statement in an article about Andy Burnham's plan (19 July). The article claimed Thames Water "serves 16 million customers." Cunningham argues it only serves its directors and shareholders.
Manchesterism and Rural Lincolnshire

Gransplaining Territory
