Noel Gallagher has thrown his support behind Oasis's 'Wonderwall' becoming England's unofficial World Cup anthem after the track was played over stadium speakers following England's 4-2 win over Croatia. Fans serenaded the players, creating what Gallagher called a 'magical moment'.
Jude Bellingham joins in
Jude Bellingham was seen singing along to 'Wonderwall' on the pitch after scoring a second-half goal in Arlington, Texas. The victory was secured with a double from Harry Kane and goals from Bellingham and Marcus Rashford at AT&T Stadium on June 17, 2026.
Players reflect on the moment
Declan Rice described the post-match scene: 'On the pitch after the game and we were just connecting with the fans and they were singing. That was special. Being in Dallas, singing Wonderwall. There's nothing like that first time.' Harry Kane added: 'That was one of my favourite ever moments in an England shirt, especially at a major tournament. It's the emotional connection with the fans, we know how much it means to them.'
Wonderwall's enduring popularity
Each country submitted a playlist of songs for before and after games, with 'Wonderwall' an obvious pick. Other tracks include The Beatles' 'Hey Jude' and Neil Diamond's 'Sweet Caroline'. Despite never hitting number one in the UK (peaking at number two in 1995), 'Wonderwall' has remained a fan favourite. Rolling Stone estimated it earns about $2,650 (£2k) in recorded-music royalties on Spotify every 24 hours, roughly $1 million per year. It remains Oasis's only Top 10 hit in the US.
Gallagher brothers' take
Noel Gallagher told The Sun: 'Wonderwall belongs to the people, and it was a magical moment between the people and the players. Best of luck to everyone who's made the trip out there.' John Stones, who plays for Manchester City—the team supported by the Gallagher brothers—previously compiled a playlist with Noel in 2018, including 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and 'Wonderwall', revealing the team 'always walk in' to the latter. Noel had quipped: 'Would you not prefer Rock And Roll Star? Wonderwall is a bit "end of the night, my bird's left me" and all that kind of thing.' Liam Gallagher once compared the song to John Lennon's 'Imagine', noting it is both universally loved and hated. He admitted to periods of being sick of the track but now recognises that the 'song is bigger than us'.
