Marks & Spencer (M&S) has confirmed that its Streatham High Road store will close its doors for the last time on Saturday, August 15, 2026. The announcement has sparked concern among local residents, who fear the closure will create a significant void on the high street and reduce footfall for nearby businesses.
Petition Launched to Save Store
Following the closure announcement, a campaign was launched to save the store, gathering nearly 1,500 signatures on an online petition. The petition statement reads: "This branch is an essential anchor for our community. It provides vital access to high-quality fresh food, serves as a crucial Click & Collect hub for local residents, and employs dedicated local staff members."
Petitioners argue that while M&S operates a separate store on Streatham Hill, forcing residents—especially families, the elderly, and less mobile shoppers—to travel there is impractical. They also note that the new store in Tooting is not easily accessible by public transport.
Community Impact Concerns
Determined customers have urged M&S leadership to reconsider the closure, emphasizing that the Streatham High Road location serves a distinct catchment area that relies on its convenience and accessibility. They warn that the loss of the store could hurt small businesses that benefit from the footfall it generates.
A spokesperson for M&S said: "We have however made the tough decision to close our Streatham High Road on Saturday 15th August. Sadly, we are not able to offer the shopping experience we want to for customers and the store’s performance has not been where it needs to be."
