Pubs and bars in Lewisham, South London, that normally serve alcohol only until 11pm have been granted an automatic extension to serve until 2am for the England vs Norway World Cup quarter-final match on Saturday, July 11. The extension applies exclusively to venues showing the game, according to Lewisham Council.
Automatic extension without paperwork
Lewisham Council announced on its Facebook page that establishments with a standard 11pm alcohol license can stay open and serve drinks until 2am without the usual requirement to apply for a Temporary Event Notice (TEN). The council stated: "England take on Norway in the quarter-finals, kicking off at 10pm on Saturday 11 July. If you're showing the match and normally serve alcohol until 11pm, you can stay open and continue serving until 2am. There's no need to apply for a Temporary Event Notice (TEN)."
The council reminded licensees that all other usual license conditions remain in effect, including capacity limits, CCTV, door staff requirements, and managing customers leaving the premises.
Eligibility and match details
Only venues that are showing the match are eligible for the extension. This includes popular spots such as the Crown Tavern in Lee and Lewisham Tavern. If the game goes into extra time or penalties, fans can continue to enjoy refreshments.
England vs Norway kicks off at 10pm on Saturday, July 11. There are injury concerns for players such as Marc Guehi and Declan Rice, with Rice expected to play despite a bug. Norway enters the match after a historic win against Brazil, with Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard facing many Premier League opponents they encounter regularly.
