Brazil international João Gomes has completed a £38m move from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Aston Villa, ending a three-and-a-half-year stint at Molineux. The 25-year-old midfielder, capped 10 times by Brazil, made 130 appearances for Wolves after joining from Flamengo.
Gomes arrives as Tielemans departs
Gomes’s arrival at Villa Park follows the departure of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United and comes as Morgan Rogers nears a £117m transfer to Chelsea. Wolves technical director Matt Jackson praised Gomes, stating: “João deserves everything he gets from the game. He’s the type of professional that coaches love and players love, so he will go on to be the outstanding player that we know he is.”
Manchester United target left-backs
Manchester United are monitoring Newcastle’s Lewis Hall and Fulham’s Antonee Robinson to bolster left-back options under manager Michael Carrick. Carrick is also seeking a third midfielder after signing Andrey Santos and Tielemans. Hall, 21, joined Newcastle from Chelsea initially on loan in 2023-24 before a permanent £28m deal (plus £7m in add-ons). He has four England caps and was overlooked for Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad. His contract runs until June 2029. Robinson, 28, signed for Fulham from Wigan for £2m in August 2020 and made four appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s USA squad. His deal expires in June 2028, though his age exceeds United’s preferred profile.
United sign Tynan Thompson
United have also signed 18-year-old winger Tynan Thompson from Tottenham for an initial £4m, with up to £4m in add-ons tied to first-team achievements. Spurs retain matching rights and a 15% sell-on clause. Thompson, who has seven England under-18 caps, scored 13 goals and provided six assists for Spurs’ youth sides last season, including seven goals in seven UEFA Youth League games.
Martínez injury concern
Lisandro Martínez was substituted in the 41st minute of Argentina’s 1-0 World Cup final defeat against Spain due to an injury. United are yet to determine the severity of the issue.
