God Of War show recasts Kratos after Hurst injury

Ryan Hurst, announced earlier this year to play Kratos in Amazon's God Of War TV show, has been forced to step down after tearing a bicep during a stunt. The injury occurred in late June, putting production on hold while Hurst undergoes surgery. According to TMZ, recovery could take up to a year, meaning he would not be able to return until mid-2027.

Production halted and reshoots planned

Deadline reports that despite four episodes being fully completed, the decision has been made to find a new actor to take over as Kratos and reshoot all of Hurst's scenes. The plan remains to film two seasons back-to-back, though no release window or footage beyond a promotional photo has been released. That photo, showing Hurst as Kratos and child actor Callum Vinson as Atreus, was widely mocked for its appearance.

Aging concerns for Atreus actor

The presence of young Callum Vinson likely influenced the recasting decision. Waiting for Hurst to recover would have caused Vinson to age out of the role. The show is presumed to aim for a 2027 release, coinciding with the expected launch of the video game God Of War Laufey, which would allow for cross-promotion.

Potential replacements

No official replacement has been announced, but common fan suggestions before Hurst's casting included Dave Bautista, Dominic Purcell, and Chris Hemsworth. The last would be ironic as he also played Thor, a role Hurst himself voiced in God Of War Ragnarök.
