Kazeta, a new custom operating system for PC, allows users to transform their digital game libraries into physical cartridges. Created by Alesh Slovak, Kazeta is designed to address growing concerns over digital ownership, particularly after Sony announced it will cease releasing physical PlayStation games after 2027.
How Kazeta Works
Kazeta is a downloadable OS that enables users to write digital games onto physical media such as SD cards or other cartridges. The system is compatible with most DRM-free games from platforms like GOG, itch.io, and emulated titles. Users must supply their own cartridges, and the website offers installation guides for those intimidated by the technical process.
Community-Driven Alternatives
Another solution comes from Reddit user Jibril-sama, who built a system to download Steam games onto physical cartridges. These cartridges can be plugged into a drive dock to launch games automatically. Jibril-sama made the system publicly available, though the cost of cartridges remains a barrier. They explained, 'I have a bunch of games that I want to replay once in a while. I don't want to keep them on my main drive constantly.'
Industry Context
Sony's decision to end physical game production has sparked backlash, with fans criticizing the move on social media and YouTube. The company is restructuring its disc production factory, making a conversion service unlikely. Meanwhile, Xbox is reportedly testing a feature to turn physical games into digital ones for its rumored digital-only Project Helix console, according to The Verge.
