The popular British Summer Time (BST) concert series in Hyde Park is set to expand, allowing up to 75,000 more people to attend annually. The decision comes despite complaints from local residents about noise and disruptive behavior from concertgoers.
Expansion Details
Westminster City Council has granted The Royal Parks permission to host nine concerts per year, each with a capacity of 69,999. This represents an increase from the previous allowance of seven concerts at 64,999 capacity and two at 49,999. The change will add up to 75,000 additional attendees across the season.
The 2026 lineup includes Maroon 5, Duran Duran, Pitbull, and Lewis Capaldi, among others. The Royal Parks stated that the expansion is necessary to "remain competitive in the market for artists" as other large London venues vie for top talent.
Economic and Operational Context
In a letter, The Royal Parks explained: "As a charity we are operating in a challenging economic environment. It costs around £75m a year to manage the parks. The charity raises around 85 percent of this money itself, with the remaining 15 percent coming from the Government." The organization emphasized that BST Hyde Park generates significant economic benefits for London, contributing millions of pounds to the local economy.
Event times will remain unchanged: concerts will finish at 10:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and 10 p.m. on Sundays. No other license modifications were made, aside from the capacity increase.
Local Opposition and Support
One local resident objected in writing, expressing concerns about noise and behavior. They stated that in one summer, noise from the festival was so loud they "could not even listen to the Wimbledon final" at home. The resident added: "Dispersing concert goers are not well-behaved and run through the residential streets screaming and alas urinating. Hyde Park was destined for all to enjoy - not to be taken over by paying guests with no respect for the environment."
However, several organizations supported the application. The Baker Street Quarter Partnership, representing 175 businesses, noted that the plans would benefit the economy and raise funds for The Royal Parks.
Noise Controls and Community Events
The Royal Parks highlighted strict noise controls in place. In 2025, only 15 unique noise complaints were recorded about park events. Additionally, BST Hyde Park hosts free community activities during the summer, including yoga, outdoor cinema, and classical orchestra performances.
