Manchester United are looking for a new goalkeeper and Scotland's Angus Gunn has emerged on their radar, according to reports. The Red Devils are seeking a backup to first-choice Senne Lammens, with Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana expected to depart this summer.
Gunn available on free transfer after Nottingham Forest release
Angus Gunn, 30, is available on a free transfer after being released by Nottingham Forest following just one year at the club. He joined Forest last summer on a one-year deal but made only one appearance. Despite limited club action, Gunn has been Scotland's first-choice goalkeeper at the World Cup this summer, starting all three group games.
Gunn has limited Premier League experience, with nine top-flight appearances for Norwich City in 2021/22 and 22 for Southampton from 2018 to 2020. However, he has amassed over 200 professional appearances, mostly in the Championship.
Manchester United's goalkeeper situation
Senne Lammens has established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper after an impressive first season at Old Trafford. Behind him, Altay Bayindir served as backup last season but is attracting interest from Besiktas in his native Turkey. Andre Onana, who spent last season on loan at Trabzonspor, has returned but is expected to be sold. Veteran Tom Heaton, 40, signed a new one-year contract this summer and remains as an experienced option.
If Bayindir and Onana leave, Lammens would be left with only Heaton as cover, prompting United to search for a goalkeeper willing to play second fiddle. Other names linked include Leeds United's Karl Darlow and Wolves' Sam Johnstone, a former Manchester United youth product.
Other goalkeepers on United's radar
Karl Darlow, 33, has been linked as a potential backup, while Sam Johnstone, 31, could return to his boyhood club. Johnstone came through United's academy and has Premier League experience with West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace. However, Gunn's availability on a free transfer makes him an attractive option.
Manchester United also have Radek Vitek, 23, returning from a loan spell at Bristol City. However, Vitek is likely to seek a permanent move to secure first-team football, with interest from Hull City and Coventry City.
