Amazon Prime Video has released all six episodes of the 2019 mini-series 'Catch-22', a dark satire part-directed by and starring George Clooney. Based on Joseph Heller's 1961 novel, the series is set during World War II and follows Captain John Yossarian, played by Christopher Abbott, an Air Force bombardier caught in a bureaucratic paradox.
Plot and Critical Reception
The story centers on Yossarian's attempt to escape combat missions by claiming insanity, only to discover that the very act of requesting relief proves his sanity under the military's Catch-22 rule. The series received an 84% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.7/10 star rating on IMDb. It was nominated for two Emmy Awards for special visual effects and sound editing.
Fan Response and Rediscovery
Fans on Reddit have praised the series, with user GOATBrady4Life calling it 'criminally neglected' and noting it 'fell through the cracks.' Another user, Abject_Rhubarb_3430, described it as 'amazing.' However, opinions are mixed; Tegeus-Cromis_2000 found it 'wooden and boring' compared to the 1970 film starring Alan Arkin and Orson Welles.
Production and Availability
Originally broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK, the Hulu production marks Clooney's first series regular role since his stint as Doug Ross on 'ER' in the 1990s. He also served as executive producer. The series is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
