Two London Underground Stations So Close TfL Says Walk Between Them
Two Tube Stations So Close TfL Says Walk

The London Underground network consists of 272 stations sprawled across the capital and beyond. The average distance between stations is around 1km, but some are much further apart - looking at you Chalfont and Latimer and Chesham - and others are crammed in together.

Leicester Square and Covent Garden

Leicester Square, for instance, sits on the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line, as well as the Piccadilly line. Meanwhile, Covent Garden also sits on the Piccadilly line. But having the two stations so close to each other may actually be redundant, as they are about four minutes from each other, according to Google Maps, if you just walk. In fact, type the names of the two stations into the TfL route tracker, and it will tell you not to waste your time - just walk down the road.

Other Close Station Pairs

They are not the only stations whose proximity could be seen as ridiculous. Wood Lane, on the Circle and Hammersmith and City lines, and White City, on the Central line, are both in West London. Having said that, they are on different lines, so it is not quite so egregious. The walk between the two is barely five minutes. Both Shepherd's Bush stops are a three-minute walk away from each other. This means you would have to take a rather roundabout route if you were really desperate to get from one to the other via the Tube.

Journey Times Between White City and Wood Lane

If, for whatever reason, you wanted to travel between the two then there are two ways to do it. The first trip consists of fewer changes but takes significantly longer. Starting at White City, you would travel eastbound on the Central Line to Liverpool Street, which takes 24 minutes. From there, you would switch to the Circle or Hammersmith and City lines, travelling anti-clockwise for 23 minutes until you reach Wood Lane. In total, this journey would take 47 minutes.

The faster route, albeit with more changeovers, starts from White City. You would hop on the Central Line Eastbound to Notting Hill Gate, then switch to the Circle or District line to Edgware Road. Here, you would transfer to a different Circle line train, or the Hammersmith and City line, before finally arriving at Wood Lane. Despite two train changes, this journey only takes 31 minutes.
