London Underground passengers have been warned of significant disruption next week as drivers from the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) prepare to stage two separate 24-hour strikes. The walkouts are scheduled to begin at 12 noon on Tuesday, May 19, and Thursday, May 21, escalating an ongoing dispute over working conditions.
Expected Service Impact
Transport for London (TfL) has stated that while a service is anticipated on most Tube lines, passengers should expect considerable variation in service levels throughout the week. Disruption is forecast to affect all lines in the afternoons following the start of each strike, with services finishing earlier than usual. Commuters are strongly advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.
Alternative Transport Options
During the industrial action, buses, the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), the Elizabeth line, London Overground, and trams will operate as normal. However, these services are likely to be busier than usual as passengers seek alternatives to the Tube. TfL recommends checking travel updates before setting out.
Background to the Dispute
The RMT union is in conflict with TfL over proposed changes to the working week, which were rejected by union members. Two strikes were already held last month, and further action is planned for June unless a resolution is reached. The union has expressed willingness to negotiate but insists on protecting its members' terms and conditions.
Passengers are urged to stay informed via TfL's official channels and to consider flexible working or alternative routes where possible. The strikes are expected to cause widespread disruption across the capital, affecting thousands of daily commuters.
