London's Road Pricing Generates Millions for Transport Body

Transport for London (TfL) has disclosed a substantial financial windfall, accumulating over £50 million solely from the Congestion Charge during the summer months of 2025. This impressive total was revealed through a Freedom of Information request made in late September, detailing income from June through August.

Breaking Down the Summer Revenue

The figures show a consistent and significant income stream for the transport authority throughout the summer period:

  • June: £17,046,285 from the Congestion Charge
  • July: £17,905,756 from the Congestion Charge
  • August: £15,979,364 from the Congestion Charge

This brings the total Congestion Charge revenue for the three-month period to a staggering £50,931,405.

Furthermore, the recently implemented charges at the Blackwall and Silvertown Tunnels contributed a substantial additional sum. The tunnels generated:

  • £4,706,108 in June
  • £5,431,683 in July
  • £4,937,880 in August

Combined, the tunnel charges added £15,075,671 to TfL's coffers, meaning London's road users paid a grand total of £66,007,076 across the summer.

Understanding the Charges and Future Changes

The Congestion Charge, which operates in central London covering an area from Kings Cross to Vauxhall and Paddington to Whitechapel, currently costs drivers £15 per day if paid in advance or on the day of travel. This fee rises to £17.50 if paid by midnight on the third day after travel.

However, these costs are set to increase from January 2 next year, rising to £18 for early payment or £21 if paid within three days. Residents living within the zone who are registered receive a 90% discount.

The charge is active from 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and from noon to 6pm on weekends and bank holidays.

The Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels began charging on April 7 this year, with tolls set at:

  • £2.50 for motorbikes
  • £4.00 for cars and small vans
  • £6.50 for large vans
  • £10.00 for HGVs

This substantial summer revenue highlights the significant financial contribution London's drivers are making to the city's transport network, with further increases scheduled for the new year.
