The 2026 London Marathon, scheduled for this Sunday, April 26, is expected to bring the capital to a standstill as over 59,000 runners take to the streets. Motorists are being urged to familiarize themselves with crucial rules to avoid hefty fines that could run into thousands of pounds.
Road Closures and Penalties
The marathon route includes 31 roads, with additional streets closed for event management. Ignoring these temporary closures is treated as seriously as ignoring permanent signs. Drivers risk fines exceeding £100, with unlimited penalties if deemed careless driving.
Parking Rules
Parking facing the wrong direction after dark violates Highway Code Rule 239, carrying a penalty of up to £1,000. Drivers are advised to avoid parking on the opposite side of the road altogether.
ULEZ and Congestion Charge
The 26.2-mile route passes through ULEZ zones including Greenwich, Southwark, the City of London, and Westminster. Non-compliant vehicles face a £12.50 daily charge, with a £180 penalty for non-payment, increasing by 50% after 28 days. Additionally, the Congestion Charge applies between noon and 6pm on weekends, adding £18. Combined, drivers may pay £30.50 for a single day.
Footwear and Tiredness
Driving barefoot or in unsuitable footwear like flip-flops violates Rule 97 of the Highway Code. Offenders can face careless driving charges, fines up to £5,000, nine penalty points, or even disqualification. Driving while tired is also a serious offence, with estimates attributing 10-20% of collisions to fatigue. The Highway Code advises against starting a journey when tired. Dangerous driving convictions can lead to unlimited fines, driving bans, or up to 14 years in prison.
