Charing Cross, Waterloo East reopen after £20m upgrade

London's Charing Cross and Waterloo East stations have reopened to passengers today after a £20 million upgrade programme, but further engineering work is scheduled for the coming months. The two major rail hubs were closed for 22 days while Network Rail carried out extensive track and infrastructure improvements, causing significant disruption for Southeastern passengers throughout the summer.

Scope of the Upgrade Works

During the closure, engineers installed approximately 1,800 metres of new track and 16 sets of switches and crossings on the 36-year-old Southeastern line. The track drainage at Waterloo East was also upgraded to 'maintain track quality and a smooth ride' at full line speed. At Charing Cross, the country end of the platforms, where concrete surfaces were deteriorating, were rebuilt with new foundations and surfaces to 'keep them safe' and open for passengers.

Structural repairs were also carried out on the 175-year-old Hungerford Bridge, which carries trains over the Thames, as well as on the pedestrian link between Waterloo East and London Waterloo stations. Network Rail had previously stated that the tracks, last replaced in the early 1990s, were 'increasingly unreliable' and, if left untreated, would likely lead to more faults and delays for commuters.

Disruption During the Closure

While the stations were closed, trains across the Southeastern network were diverted to other London terminals, adding to journey times for many passengers. The work was part of a broader effort to modernise ageing infrastructure and improve reliability on one of the capital's busiest commuter routes.

Although services have now returned to normal, National Rail has confirmed that further planned engineering work will take place across two weekends between now and October. Passengers are advised to plan ahead and check before travelling.

Upcoming Weekend Closures

On Sunday, August 23, engineering work will take place between London Charing Cross and London Bridge, and on lines near New Cross used by services to and from Charing Cross. Many routes into Charing Cross will instead be diverted to London Cannon Street. National Rail has confirmed that affected passengers can use the London Underground between Victoria, Charing Cross, Embankment, Waterloo, Southwark and London Bridge at no extra cost.

On the weekend of October 10-11, there will be no trains to and from Charing Cross and Waterloo East as engineering work takes place between Charing Cross and New Cross. A reduced service will run between London Bridge and Cannon Street, while on Sunday, trains will be diverted to and from London Victoria. Replacement buses will operate between Greenwich and Sidcup, Lewisham and Orpington, and Grove Park and Bromley North. Stations including New Cross, St Johns, Hither Green, Mottingham, New Eltham, Grove Park, Elmstead Woods, Chislehurst, Sundridge Park (Sunday) and Bromley North (Sunday) will be closed. Network Rail has urged everyone to check before travelling.
