Sutton A232 road faces six months of overnight closures

Transport for London (TfL) will introduce overnight closures on a major road in Sutton for up to six months, starting Tuesday, October 27, to resurface a long stretch of the A232.

The restrictions will affect the A232 Ewell Road and Cheam Road, specifically the section between its junctions with The Broadway and Station Way, extending to the boundary with Epsom and Ewell.

Temporary traffic order and duration

A temporary traffic order, announced by TfL on October 15, will ban vehicles from entering, leaving, travelling along, or stopping on the affected parts of the road during the works. The order is set to remain in force until April 26, 2027, meaning restrictions could last as long as six months.

However, drivers will not face a continuous six-month closure. The works will be carried out in phases, with restrictions applying only to certain sections and at certain times. Closures will be limited to overnight hours between 9pm and 5am, and signs will indicate when and where restrictions are in force.

Diversion routes and exemptions

TfL stated that the order could be lifted earlier if the works are completed before April. When closures are in place, motorists will be diverted via Northey Avenue, Belmont Rise, and High Road, or in the opposite direction. An alternative diversion will take drivers via The Broadway, Malden Road, London Road, Ewell By-Pass, and Cheam Road.

Vehicles being used for the works and emergency services will be exempt from the restrictions.
