A man in his 70s has died after a collision with a lorry on a high street in South London, the Metropolitan Police has confirmed. Officers were called at 11:03 AM on Friday to reports of a crash between a pedestrian and a lorry on Clapham High Street. The man was treated at the scene by paramedics, but despite the best efforts of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at 11:36 AM.
Emergency Response
The London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance also attended the incident. Lambeth Council announced road closures and diversions in place following the tragic fatal road traffic collision. In a post on X, the council expressed condolences: "Our thoughts are with all those affected." Clapham Library remained closed for the rest of the day as a result of the incident.
Investigation Underway
Footage shared on social media showed a section of Clapham High Street, near the intersection with Clapham Manor Street, cordoned off around a blue tent, with several police cars and a dozen officers in attendance. The Metropolitan Police has launched an investigation and is urging anyone with information or dashcam footage to call 101 quoting CAD2859/22MAY26, or contact the North Serious Collision Investigation Unit witness line at 0207 960 8044.
The incident has left the local community in shock. Authorities continue to appeal for witnesses to come forward to assist with the inquiry. The road closures are expected to remain in place as investigations proceed.
