M80 Motorway Reopens Following Serious Crash and 15-Hour Closure
A critical section of the M80 motorway in Scotland has finally reopened after being shut down for more than 15 hours due to a serious crash. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 19 March 2026, led to extensive traffic tailbacks and significant disruptions for motorists.
Details of the Incident and Closure
Police Scotland reported that they were alerted to the crash on the M80 at approximately 12:25 AM on Thursday. In response, the motorway was closed in both directions between Junction 9 and Junction 8 at the Sclandersburn Road overbridge in Denny, Falkirk. The closure was necessary to allow for a thorough police investigation into the serious nature of the incident.
Traffic Scotland emphasized that due to the severity of the crash, there were no immediate timescales for reopening, as investigations were ongoing. This prolonged closure caused major delays, particularly during rush hour, with northbound traffic facing tailbacks of about an hour and southbound delays of around 20 minutes.
Reopening and Traffic Recovery
The northbound lane of the M80 reopened shortly after 3:30 PM, followed by the southbound lane at approximately 4:10 PM. Following the reopening, Traffic Scotland announced that traffic was beginning to revert back to normal levels for the time of day. However, details regarding any potential casualties from the crash remain unknown at this time.
During the closure, drivers in both directions were forced to navigate diversions of approximately 17 miles, adding to the commuting challenges. Police Scotland had earlier posted on social media to inform the public about the closure and the implemented diversions.
Emergency Services Response
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that they were not called out to the crash scene. The Scottish Ambulance Service has been contacted for further comment on their involvement. The incident highlights the significant impact of road closures on major transport routes and the importance of swift emergency responses.
This event serves as a reminder of the disruptions that can arise from serious traffic incidents on key motorways like the M80, affecting daily commutes and regional travel in Scotland.
