Hollywood star Eddie Redmayne has been slapped with a substantial £1,530 court bill after being caught breaking one of London's strict 20mph speed limits. The Oscar-winning actor faced criminal prosecution from the Metropolitan Police for an offence committed last October while driving through Earl's Court in West London.
Details of the Speeding Incident
Court documents reveal that Redmayne's Audi was captured by a speed camera traveling at 28mph on the A4 Cromwell Road as he approached West Kensington. The incident occurred at approximately 11am on October 14, 2025. The A4 had been converted to a 20mph zone in autumn 2023 as part of Transport for London's initiative to reduce speeds across 65 kilometers of London roads.
Legal Proceedings and Penalties
The actor admitted to being the driver but submitted his response to police too late to avoid court proceedings. Redmayne pleaded guilty to the speeding offence and was sentenced at Westminster Magistrates' Court through the Single Justice Procedure, which allowed him to avoid a personal court appearance.
His penalties included:
- A £1,000 fine
- Three penalty points on his driving licence
- £130 in court costs
- A £400 victim surcharge
Procedural Delays and Prosecution
The Metropolitan Police sent Redmayne a notice of intended prosecution on October 20, 2025, just six days after the offence. However, the actor didn't respond until March 1, 2026, signing a form acknowledging he was the driver. A police official noted that this delayed response made the case ineligible for out-of-court settlement, necessitating prosecution.
"Due to the late response to notice of intended prosecution, this case does not qualify for an out of court disposal and has therefore been referred to the prosecutions team for a single justice procedure notice to be issued," the official stated in court documents.
Broader Context of 20mph Enforcement
Redmayne was among 450 motorists prosecuted by the Metropolitan Police last week for violating London's 20mph zones. These prosecutions resulted in court fines ranging from £40 to the maximum £1,000 penalty. Kensington and Chelsea Council had announced plans in 2020 to implement 20mph limits across all residential roads, with the A4 Cromwell Road being part of this broader traffic calming initiative.
The actor, who won an Academy Award in 2015 for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, continues his film career while now dealing with the consequences of this traffic violation. The case highlights the strict enforcement of London's reduced speed limits aimed at improving road safety across the capital.
