School Bus Roof Sheared Off in Bridge Collision
Emergency services rushed to a distressing scene in Lancashire on Wednesday afternoon after a double-decker school bus had its roof completely torn off. The violent incident occurred when the tall vehicle attempted to pass under a bridge on Spendmore Lane in the village of Coppull.
Emergency Response and Injuries
Lancashire Police confirmed they were called to the scene shortly after 12:30pm on Wednesday 3 December 2025. Upon arrival, they found the severely damaged bus with its roof ripped clean away. Medical staff swiftly assessed approximately 30 children who had been on board at the time of the collision.
Paramedics treated eight children for minor injuries at the scene. One child, an eight-year-old boy, sustained what police described as a "nasty cut to the head" and was transported to hospital for further care. Thankfully, the bus driver and two teachers accompanying the pupils emerged from the shocking ordeal physically unhurt.
Road Closure and Investigation
The road was immediately closed to allow emergency crews to work safely and for the recovery of the wrecked vehicle. Spendmore Lane remained shut for around three hours, causing significant local disruption, before eventually reopening to traffic.
In a statement posted on social media following the incident, Lancashire Police expressed relief that the consequences were not more severe. "We would like to thank everyone for their cooperation and support while we dealt with this incident which thankfully did not result in more serious injury," the force said.
The exact circumstances leading to the bus striking the bridge remain under investigation. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the specific challenges posed by the height of double-decker vehicles on certain routes.
