M11 queues near Stansted after multi-vehicle crashes

Motorists are experiencing severe traffic congestion on the M11 near Stansted Airport following two multi-vehicle collisions on Friday. The incidents have caused gridlock on the motorway north of Stansted, with drivers held in both directions between Junction 10 Royston and Junction 9 Newmarket after a serious crash. Delays are building up in the area.

Earlier, two lanes were closed southbound between Junction 9 Newmarket and Junction 8 Stansted Airport after another multi-vehicle crash. Emergency services are at the scene, and vehicle recovery has been arranged. National Highways warned that delays are building, with stationary traffic stretching back five miles towards Cambridgeshire, causing 45-minute delays on approach.

National Highways East tweeted: "2 lanes are closed on M11 south between J9 (Newmarket) and J8 (Stansted Airport) due to a multi vehicle collision. Emergency services on scene. Recovery has been arranged and enroute. Delays building, currently 45mins and 5 miles of congestion on the approach."

Metro has contacted the emergency services for comment. Meanwhile, drivers on the M1 are also facing long delays after a broken-down lorry blocked the motorway. The lorry's brakes locked on, making it immovable. The incident occurred between Junction 11 near Luton and Luton Airport, causing 60-minute delays in the area.
