A 38-year-old man died in a collision between a car and a bus on the North Circular in West London overnight. Emergency services were called to Gunnersbury Avenue in Chiswick at around 12:20am on August 20, where they found three injured people.
Passenger died at scene; driver arrested
The passenger of the car was pronounced dead at the scene, the Metropolitan Police confirmed in a statement. The force has not yet released his name but is supporting his next-of-kin. The driver, a 24-year-old man, was taken to hospital and has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He continues to receive treatment for non-life-threatening or life-changing injuries.
Paramedics also took the bus driver, aged 61, to hospital with minor injuries as a precaution. Gunnersbury Avenue was cordoned off for several hours between Chiswick Roundabout and Gunnersbury Lane while the fatal scene was investigated.
Police and ambulance response
Officers are now appealing for any witnesses, especially those with CCTV or dashcam footage, to come forward to help with ongoing enquiries. The London Ambulance Service dispatched several specialised resources to the collision, including London's Air Ambulance.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 12:18am today (20 August) to reports of a road traffic collision on Gunnersbury Avenue, W3. We sent ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response cars, an incident response officer and paramedics from our hazardous area response team (HART). We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London’s Air Ambulance. The first paramedic arrived on the scene in less than seven minutes. We treated three people in total. We took two patients to hospital but sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a patient was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Appeal for witnesses
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting CAD141/20AUG. The Metropolitan Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision.
