Tragic Snowmobile Accident Claims Life of Australian Schoolgirl in Japan
An eight-year-old Australian schoolgirl has died in a devastating snowmobile accident while on a family holiday at a popular Japanese ski resort. Chloe Jeffries, from the Gold Coast in Queensland, was reportedly riding a snowmobile in the Hakuba Valley on Saturday when the vehicle rolled, resulting in fatal injuries.
According to a statement from the travel company Hakuba Lion Adventure, the incident occurred during a tour involving nine snowmobiles, including three guides. Near an uphill curve along a forest road, the snowmobile rode up onto the embankment at the side of the trail and overturned. Chloe, who was riding as a passenger in tandem, became trapped beneath the vehicle.
She received immediate first aid at the scene and was transported to a hospital by helicopter, but medical efforts could not revive her. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed on Wednesday morning that it is providing consular assistance to the family, expressing deep condolences during this difficult time.

The South Coast Netball Association paid tribute to Chloe in a heartfelt social media post, describing her as a very special part of their netball family. They highlighted her beautiful nature, cheeky and infectious smile, and the joy she brought to those around her. Chloe was known for brightening the courts and was her big sister Hallee's biggest supporter, always cheering from the sidelines with pride, encouragement, and love.
This tragic event marks the fourth Australian death in Japan's snowfields this year. In February, 27-year-old Melbourne man Michael Hurst died while skiing in Niseko. Queensland snowboarder Brooke Day lost her life in January after her avalanche rescue backpack became caught in a chairlift. Earlier that month, Brisbane teenager Ryan Pribadi reportedly died while skiing in Niseko.
The Hakuba Valley, renowned for its picturesque slopes and winter sports, is now the site of this heartbreaking incident, underscoring the risks associated with snowmobile tours and alpine activities. Authorities and travel companies are likely to review safety protocols in the wake of this accident to prevent future tragedies.
