Former England captain Alan Shearer has changed his World Cup prediction on the eve of England's quarter-final clash with Norway, now believing Thomas Tuchel's side can go all the way. Writing on the BBC, Shearer said: 'Before I went to the Azteca Stadium, and watched us deal with everything that was thrown at us, I didn't truly believe England could win this World Cup – but I've changed my mind.'
England's quarter-final victory
England reached the last eight after a dramatic 3-2 win over co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Azteca stadium. Despite a hostile atmosphere, unfavorable conditions, and a red card for Jarell Quansah, Tuchel's side clung on for a narrow victory. The Three Lions now face Norway, who continued their impressive run by defeating five-time winners Brazil in New Jersey.
Shearer's change of heart
Shearer, who previously doubted England's chances, now sees parallels with Euro 96. 'In my experience as a fan, player or pundit, whenever England have done well at a tournament, there's always a performance like that from us somewhere that lifts everyone,' he wrote. 'I had it myself as a player at Euro '96 when we beat the Netherlands 4-1 at Wembley and felt unstoppable. We fell agonisingly short in 1996 when we lost on penalties in the semi-finals but, 30 years on, there are plenty of reasons why this England side are capable of going at least one step further.'
Dealing with Haaland
England's main challenge will be stopping Norway's Erling Haaland, who has scored seven goals in four matches this tournament. Shearer advised restricting his supply rather than trying to stop him directly. 'He's relentless, and I don't think there's a way of stopping him. Instead you have to try to restrict his supply, at source, where the ball is coming from,' Shearer said.
Injury and suspension concerns
England have several issues within their ranks. Declan Rice missed two days of training due to a sickness bug, while Marc Guehi is a doubt with a hamstring injury sustained against Mexico. Jarell Quansah is suspended for two games after his red card. However, Tuchel is hopeful Reece James will be available after recovering from a hamstring issue.
