In a heart-stopping climax to the 2025 Formula 1 season, Lando Norris has secured his maiden F1 World Drivers' Championship title. The 26-year-old British driver sealed the crown with a third-place finish at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday 7 December 2025.
A Dramatic Decider at Yas Marina
The championship battle went down to the wire at the Yas Marina Circuit. While Red Bull's Max Verstappen took the chequered flag to win the race, it was not enough to overhaul Norris's points lead. By finishing in third position, Norris limited the damage and secured the title by a mere two points in the final standings.
Norris's McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, who was also in title contention, finished the race in second place. However, Piastri ultimately ended the campaign third in the championship, behind the new world champion and Verstappen.
Historic Victory for Britain and McLaren
This landmark victory makes Lando Norris the 11th British driver to win the Formula 1 World Championship. He is the first from the UK to lift the trophy since the legendary Sir Lewis Hamilton last did so in 2020.
The drivers' title completes an incredible clean sweep for the McLaren team in 2025. The Woking-based squad had already wrapped up the Constructors' Championship back in October at the Singapore Grand Prix, making this a truly dominant season for the papaya orange cars.
Celebrations on the Track
An elated Norris marked his historic achievement with the traditional celebratory 'doughnuts' on the Abu Dhabi track, sending plumes of tyre smoke into the night sky as his team and fans celebrated.
This triumph is the culmination of years of progression for Norris, who joined McLaren in 2019 and has steadily developed into a world-class talent, finally converting his potential into the sport's ultimate prize in a dramatic and unforgettable finale.
