Lando Norris Expresses Confidence in Max Verstappen's F1 Future
McLaren driver and defending world champion Lando Norris has voiced his belief that Max Verstappen will continue competing in Formula One, despite the Dutch driver's vocal dissatisfaction with this season's new regulations. Norris emphasized that Verstappen's potential departure would represent a significant loss for the sport, describing the Red Bull champion as "one of the best drivers you'll see in Formula One ever."
Regulatory Changes Address Driver Concerns
The controversy centers on new regulations implemented this season that focus heavily on electrical energy management, which now accounts for nearly 50% of a car's power output. Verstappen has been particularly critical of these rules, suggesting they negatively impact how drivers race and even hinting at possible retirement from the sport.
However, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) recently announced adjustments to these regulations following widespread driver feedback. The changes, which will take effect at the upcoming Miami Grand Prix on May 3, specifically address energy recovery management parameters during both qualifying sessions and races.
Optimism Among Drivers Following Adjustments
Norris expressed cautious optimism about the regulatory revisions, stating: "Hopefully things get better and I just saw that he said he wants to win the fifth world championship at the minute, so I'm sure he'll stay longer than people say."
McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri echoed this sentiment, noting that the FIA had taken driver concerns seriously. "The two main things we wanted addressing was reinstating the challenge in qualifying and making things more natural in the way it should be in qualifying," Piastri explained. "Being able to reduce the closing speeds and the speed differences in the race in unexpected places was also crucial."
Piastri added: "The FIA took it very seriously. F1 took it very seriously. I think that's reflected in some of the changes and the dialogue's been very good. We'll have to wait and see if we need further changes."
Norris Emphasizes Verstappen's Importance to F1
Despite acknowledging the competitive challenges Verstappen presents to fellow drivers, Norris stressed the four-time champion's value to Formula One. "It would be a shame for the sport, it would be a miss for the sport if that does happen," Norris stated regarding Verstappen's potential departure.
He elaborated: "It would be a shame for us because as much as he makes our lives incredibly tough at times, he's always good fun to race against and it's always cool to race against someone that's won four world championships. You always feel like you want to race against the best in the world and he certainly is one of them, so it would be a loss for the sport."
Open Dialogue with Media Continues
Norris made these comments during an event at McLaren's technology center in Woking, where he embraced all questions from journalists. This marked a contrast to the previous week, when Norris's personal management team had intervened during an interview with the Guardian, preventing questions about the new regulations or rival drivers Verstappen and George Russell.
Norris had expressed regret about that incident and has maintained his reputation for having a friendly, transparent relationship with media representatives when representing his team. The British driver continues to engage openly with press inquiries, particularly when discussing matters directly related to Formula One competition and development.
The regulatory adjustments represent Formula One's ongoing efforts to balance technological innovation with competitive racing integrity, while addressing concerns from the sport's top competitors about how rule changes affect the fundamental experience of driving at the highest level of motorsport.
