Hamilton Confident Ferrari Can Challenge Mercedes for 2026 F1 Title
Hamilton: Ferrari in Fight with Mercedes for 2026 F1 Championship

Following a challenging debut season with Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton has emerged with renewed vigor and confidence, declaring that his team is ready to challenge Mercedes for the 2026 Formula One world championship. The British driver's optimism comes after Ferrari secured third and fourth places in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, with Hamilton finishing behind teammate Charles Leclerc.

Ferrari Shows Competitive Pace in Melbourne

The Australian Grand Prix saw Mercedes' George Russell claim victory, with his teammate Kimi Antonelli taking second place. However, Ferrari demonstrated impressive performance as both Leclerc and Hamilton executed brilliant starts, moving up to first and third positions respectively during the opening laps. For the first twelve laps of the race, the two Ferraris engaged in a thrilling battle with Russell at the front of the field.

While Mercedes ultimately secured the win by capitalizing on a virtual safety car period for a strategic pit stop, Ferrari's pace throughout the race indicated they could be genuine contenders this season. Hamilton, who described his first year with Ferrari as a "nightmare" season where he failed to achieve a single podium finish, now appears reinvigorated and enthusiastic about the team's prospects.

Hamilton's Renewed Confidence

"The team did a great job overall," Hamilton stated after the race. "There are lots of positives to take. A couple of more laps and I would have had Charles, so I know we can be fighting for podiums. We're not as fast as Mercedes but we're right in the fight. We've got a lot of work to do to catch them but it's not impossible."

The seven-time world champion acknowledged that Ferrari would review their strategic decisions from Melbourne, particularly their choice not to pit during the virtual safety car period that allowed Mercedes to gain an advantage. "I feel great," Hamilton added. "We got a third and fourth and ultimately Mercedes were quicker than us. We need to see if stopping would have been better. I definitely thought we should have come in or, at least one of us, to cover the Mercedes. We will look to see what we can do better."

Mercedes Acknowledges Ferrari Threat

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff confirmed that Ferrari poses a genuine threat to their championship aspirations this season. "It was a three-way fight at a certain stage between the two Ferraris and George, and eventually Kimi caught up," Wolff observed. "The race pace at the end was very encouraging from our side, but at the beginning, there was nothing between Ferrari and Mercedes. For me, the prevailing feeling is now we have a fight on our hands with Ferrari."

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur echoed Hamilton's sentiments about the team's potential to close the gap to Mercedes. "It's good to have two cars fighting at the top," Vasseur said. "We know that we have a very long list of improvements but it's good for us. The result of the season will be based on the capacity that we have to develop, to bring upgrades, to produce quickly. This will be key for the season for everybody on the grid. I prefer to start the season in a good shape than in a bad shape, but it's still a long way to go."

Piastri's Melbourne Heartbreak

The Australian Grand Prix brought disappointment for local hero Oscar Piastri, who crashed out during the formation lap before the race even began. The Australian driver lost control of his car while riding the kerb at turn four, spinning into the wall and causing significant damage to his vehicle. Cold tires, lack of grip on the kerb, and an unexpected power surge following a gear shift all contributed to the incident.

Piastri accepted responsibility for the crash, and his team principal Andrea Stella expressed confidence in the driver's ability to recover strongly at the next race in China. "Very unfortunate," Stella commented. "Definitely a tough moment for him in front of the Australian crowd. Oscar is a very tough guy mentally. He will use all this to get even more concentrated and determined starting from China. We will make sure that we all face this in a united way. We are a team in any situation that may involve any of our team."
