The Women's Super League (WSL) and Women's Championship will allow fans to consume alcohol in their seats from the 2026-27 season, the Football Association (FA) has confirmed. The decision follows a successful trial during the 2025-26 campaign, which saw no major safety or disorder issues reported across participating clubs.
Successful trial paves the way for permanent change
The pilot programme, which ran from August 2025 to May 2026, involved 10 clubs from both divisions. Under the trial, supporters were permitted to drink alcohol while watching matches from their seats, a departure from the traditional restriction that required alcohol to be consumed only in concourse areas. The FA said that feedback from clubs, safety officials, and fans was overwhelmingly positive, with no increase in anti-social behaviour or ejections related to alcohol consumption.
According to an FA spokesperson, “The trial demonstrated that responsible drinking can be managed effectively in the women’s game. We are delighted to make this permanent for next season.” The decision aligns the women’s top tiers with many other sporting events in the UK, such as rugby and cricket, where drinking in seats is already permitted.
Impact on fan experience and safety
The change is expected to enhance the matchday experience for supporters, allowing them to remain in their seats during play rather than missing action to visit concourse bars. Clubs involved in the trial reported that concession sales increased by approximately 15% on average, while stewarding costs remained stable. The FA emphasised that safety remains a priority, and any club that experiences persistent issues could have the privilege revoked.
Critics, including some fan groups, have raised concerns about potential disorder, but the FA cited data from the trial showing that incidents of alcohol-related misconduct were negligible. “The pilot was conducted with robust monitoring, and we are confident that the measures in place will maintain a family-friendly atmosphere,” the spokesperson added.
Reaction from clubs and supporters
Several clubs have welcomed the move. A representative from Arsenal Women said, “This is a positive step that brings the women’s game in line with other sports and respects the wishes of our fans.” The decision also enjoys support from the Women’s Football Fans Association, which had campaigned for the change. However, some away supporters’ groups have expressed caution, urging clubs to ensure that away sections are also included in the policy.
The FA confirmed that the new rule will apply to all WSL and Women’s Championship matches starting from August 2026, with individual clubs retaining the right to restrict alcohol in specific areas if deemed necessary.
