Ian Wright Slams Amorim for 'Embarrassing' Mainoo Snub at Man Utd
Wright: Mainoo 'Embarrassed' Amorim After Spurs Win

Football pundit Ian Wright has launched a scathing critique of former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, claiming the Portuguese coach 'embarrassed' himself by sidelining young star Kobbie Mainoo.

Mainoo's Dramatic Resurgence Under Carrick

Wright's comments follow Mainoo's impressive performances since Michael Carrick took over at Old Trafford, culminating in another influential display during United's 2-0 Premier League victory against Tottenham on Saturday.

The 20-year-old midfielder, who was a peripheral figure under Amorim, has started all four league matches under Carrick's management. This marks a stark contrast to his situation earlier this season, where he failed to start a single Premier League game before Amorim's dismissal on January 5.

'Very Embarrassing for Amorim'

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Wright expressed bewilderment at Amorim's treatment of the England international. 'Everybody was confused with what was happening under Ruben Amorim,' Wright stated. 'I think it's very embarrassing for Ruben Amorim, if we're going to be totally honest. What we're seeing now is a Man United youth product not given the opportunity to play and very, very close to leaving the club.'

Wright highlighted Mainoo's immediate impact, noting his quality in a United midfield that has faced considerable scrutiny. 'He was brilliant today, magnificent,' Wright added, praising Mainoo's composure and technical ability.

Berbatov Backs Mainoo's United Future

Former United striker Dimitar Berbatov echoed Wright's sentiments, expressing delight that Mainoo remained at the club. Berbatov detailed the youngster's intelligent play, emphasising his spatial awareness and game management.

'He's constantly scanning the pitch, making that picture in his head so he knows exactly how to play,' Berbatov observed. 'He's very clever slowing the game when it needs to be slowed down, drawing the opposition towards him then passing the ball. This way it frees space in the opposition half.'

Berbatov concluded that Mainoo's decision to stay could prove pivotal, suggesting the midfielder will continue to develop under Carrick's guidance. 'We are not forced to watch him play for another team because now we can see how good he really is, and I think he can become even better.'

A Pivotal Role in Carrick's Plans

Mainoo had reportedly considered a transfer away from Manchester United during the January window due to his limited opportunities under Amorim. However, his rapid integration into Carrick's starting lineup indicates a significant shift in his career trajectory at the club.

With United showing improved form under their new manager, Mainoo appears set to play a central role in the midfield for the remainder of the campaign, justifying Wright's assertion that his talent was previously overlooked in an 'embarrassing' manner by the former regime.
