Jack Wilshere Champions Max Dowman for England World Cup Selection
Former Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere has publicly endorsed teenage prodigy Max Dowman for inclusion in England's upcoming World Cup squad, sending a clear message to national team manager Thomas Tuchel ahead of this summer's tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Dowman's Meteoric Rise Through Arsenal Ranks
The 16-year-old attacker has emerged from Arsenal's academy system to establish himself as one of English football's most exciting young talents this season. Dowman announced his arrival with a scintillating cameo appearance during Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Everton last month, providing the cross that led to Viktor Gyokeres' opener before scoring a stoppage-time stunner that made him the youngest ever goalscorer in Premier League history.
During the recent international break, Dowman continued his record-breaking form with a wonder strike in England Under-19's 6-0 thrashing of Portugal, becoming the youngest scorer in the age group's history. Despite Arsenal's FA Cup exit against Southampton this weekend, Dowman's meteoric rise continued as he emerged as the visitors' standout player in what was only his third senior start for the club.
Wilshere's Compelling Argument for Dowman's Inclusion
While some former England internationals like Michael Owen and Theo Walcott have expressed reservations about including such a young player, Wilshere takes a decidedly different view. The former Arsenal midfielder, who now manages League One outfit Luton Town, told The Telegraph: "The only thing I would say is, Spain would take him. That's what I think."
Wilshere elaborated on his position, stating: "He is definitely good enough. Even if he goes and he doesn't play that much. Which I think he can. I think he is good enough. He is going to be there eventually."
The former England international drew direct comparisons to Spain's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, who starred at Euro 2024 as a 16-year-old: "I understand people saying, 'Maybe not'. But I also think [Lamine] Yamal went as a 16-year-old [to Euro 2024] and he was the best player in the tournament."
Wilshere's Personal Perspective on Dowman's Talent
Having emerged from Arsenal's academy as a supremely talented youngster himself, Wilshere possesses unique insight into Dowman's situation. He revealed that he once told his father: "Dad, you need to come and watch this kid. I think he is better than me."
Wilshere acknowledged the pressure surrounding young talents but believes Dowman can surpass his own career achievements: "I don't want to put pressure on him [Dowman], but there is so much now anyway." Regarding Dowman's unforgettable goal against Everton, Wilshere added candidly: "I don't score that goal at 16."
Tuchel's Cautious Approach to Dowman Hype
England manager Thomas Tuchel has refused to close the door on Dowman's World Cup prospects while maintaining a measured approach. Before England's recent friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, Tuchel told reporters: "We always have the chance to call him up for the World Cup. There is no need to call him up now to increase the pressure but we have all the options. Why wouldn't I keep the door open? I keep the door open for anyone with any age."
The England head coach acknowledged the changing landscape of international football while urging caution: "It is [becoming a younger player's game], but there's also the risk to compare it to Lamine Yamal, to compare it to, I don't know... Lionel Messi and so on. Has Lamine Yamal played more minutes for his club before he played for his country? I would say so. This is exactly the danger and the risk of all of that; it becomes a crazy hype that does in the end not help."
Tuchel emphasized that final decisions will be made when England builds their World Cup squad in May, noting that Dowman's limited starting opportunities at club level represent a consideration: "At the moment he's not a regular starter. You could argue you should be maybe a starter at your club to be considered. Of course it's impressive what he's doing. It's impressive the feedback I get from players and people who know him."
The debate over Dowman's potential inclusion continues as England prepares for this summer's global tournament, with Wilshere's endorsement adding significant weight to calls for the teenage sensation's selection despite his limited senior experience.
