West Ham United have slapped a hefty £80 million price tag on midfielder Mateus Fernandes, according to reports. The 21-year-old Portugal international, who joined the Hammers from Southampton last summer for a fee reported to be in excess of £40 million, has attracted significant interest from top clubs including Manchester United, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain.
High Stakes for West Ham
West Ham's bargaining position is heavily influenced by their Premier League survival prospects. On the final day of the season, the Hammers host Leeds United and must win while hoping Tottenham lose at home to Everton to avoid relegation. Despite a poor run of form, Spurs have not won a home league game since December, offering a glimmer of hope for West Ham.
If relegated, West Ham would need to generate at least £100 million through player sales, according to The Guardian. However, the club is reluctant to lose captain Jarrod Bowen, who is also attracting interest from several Premier League clubs including Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea. Bowen, 30, is under contract until 2030, and his price tag could deter potential suitors.
Fernandes' Rise
Fernandes came through Sporting Lisbon's youth academy before a season at Southampton and subsequent move to East London. His performances have caught the eye of Europe's elite, but West Ham's ambitious £80 million valuation may force clubs to explore cheaper alternatives.
Bowen has issued a rallying cry ahead of the crucial fixture: 'There's nothing else. There's no waiting, there's no hiding. It's do-or-die on the weekend and hopefully the results go our way. We have to go and just leave it all out there on Sunday.'
