Queens Park Rangers and Blackburn Rovers have been dealt a significant transfer setback as West Bromwich Albion have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Bristol City goalkeeper Max O'Leary. The Championship clubs had been competing for the 29-year-old shot-stopper's signature, but it appears the Baggies have won the race for the in-demand Republic of Ireland international.
QPR's Goalkeeping Conundrum Continues
QPR manager Julien Stephan has been openly dissatisfied with his goalkeeping options throughout the current season, having rotated between Joe Walsh, Paul Nardi, and Ben Hamer in various matches. The London club had identified O'Leary as a primary target to bring stability to their defensive line, but will now need to explore alternative options in the January transfer window.
Speaking about his team's goalkeeping situation earlier this week, Stephan told reporters: "Sometimes it's a question of game plan and characteristics. But I agree, we need some continuity. It's important for the back four." This statement highlights the manager's desire for consistency in the goalkeeper position, something O'Leary could have provided had the transfer materialised.
O'Leary's Career Path and West Brom Move
Max O'Leary has spent his entire professional career at Bristol City, making 127 appearances for the Robins since his debut in 2015. The goalkeeper has also gained valuable experience through loan spells at Kidderminster Harriers, Bath City, Solihull Moors, and Shrewsbury Town during his development years.
According to Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, West Brom have agreed a permanent six-month contract with O'Leary, who had just six months remaining on his Bristol City deal. The goalkeeper had fallen down the pecking order at Ashton Gate following the arrival of Radek Vitek on loan from Manchester United, making just five appearances this season when Vitek was unavailable through injury.
Broader Transfer Implications
The failed pursuit of O'Leary represents the second goalkeeping disappointment for QPR in recent weeks. The club had also been linked with Sunderland's Anthony Patterson, but those negotiations reportedly stalled due to the Black Cats' insistence on a permanent transfer with a fee considered too high for Championship clubs. There have been renewed suggestions that Patterson could depart on loan, with Millwall also showing interest in the 25-year-old.
Derby County had initially been mentioned alongside QPR and Blackburn Rovers as potential suitors for O'Leary, but none of these clubs were able to secure the goalkeeper's signature.
