Rene van der Gijp Urges Raheem Sterling to Retire and 'Just Go to Ibiza'

Former Netherlands international Rene van der Gijp has launched a scathing critique of Raheem Sterling following the forward's underwhelming performances for Feyenoord, bluntly advising him to retire from professional football and 'just go to Ibiza'. Sterling, who left Chelsea by mutual agreement in late January and joined Feyenoord as a free agent, has faced mounting criticism after a series of lackluster displays in the Dutch Eredivisie.

Sterling's Challenging Transition to Feyenoord

At 31 years old, Sterling ended his tenure at Chelsea without playing a single minute in the first half of the season, following an unimpressive loan spell with Arsenal. Seeking to revive his career, he moved overseas, signing a short-term deal with Feyenoord that runs until the end of the season. Despite reported interest from Premier League clubs like West Ham, Crystal Palace, and Fulham, Sterling opted for the Dutch side, but his impact has been minimal so far.

In his first five appearances for Feyenoord, Sterling has managed only one assist, contributing to a comeback victory over Excelsior. His performance in a recent 1-1 draw against Ajax was particularly disappointing, leading head coach Robin van Persie to substitute him in the 55th minute as the team chased an equalizer, which was later secured by Jakub Moder's penalty.

Harsh Criticism from Dutch Football Figures

On the Willem & Wessel podcast, Van der Gijp did not hold back in his assessment of Sterling's form. 'He should just go to Robin van Persie and say: let's stop this. This isn't going to work,' he stated. 'This isn't good for me, for you, or for the club. You're not really helping anyone with this.' Van der Gijp suggested that Sterling would be better off enjoying retirement in Ibiza, saying, 'He should just go to Ibiza, put on his swimming trunks and eat a delicious paella with his wife. Then he'd be having a great time. But this isn't going to work out for him anymore. What a shame.'

Fellow podcaster Willem van Hanegem echoed these sentiments, arguing that Sterling appears past his prime and that Feyenoord should consider cutting their losses. 'He just wasn't there again, no. If I were them, I would ask for my money back and say: just go home,' Van Hanegem remarked. He highlighted Sterling's decline in speed and physicality, noting, 'If he bumps into you, he falls over. Isn't that crazy? You shouldn't do that yourself as a player either. If he lacks speed and has the ball, they just walk right over him. That's pointless.'

Van Persie's Expectations and Sterling's Future

Despite the criticism, Van Hanegem does not anticipate Sterling being dropped for Feyenoord's upcoming match against FC Volendam, though he believes many share the view that the player is underperforming. After the Ajax draw, Van Persie expressed a desire for Sterling to show more impact on the field. 'The most important thing is winning matches during this period of Raheem getting fitter and fitter,' Van Persie told reporters. 'I do respect and acknowledge where he is coming from, but at the same time we have to deliver as a club. We have to end up second, it's as simple as that. I believe he's making steps in terms of fitness, in terms of what he delivers. At the same time, I want to see more impact off the ball, more impact on the ball.'

Sterling's short-term deal with Feyenoord leaves his future uncertain as the season progresses, with his performances under intense scrutiny from fans and pundits alike.
