The decision to shorten the stage came as wildfires in the south of France led to nearly 200,000 evacuations. Race officials redirected resources to assist emergency services, making the finale more compact. Riders were bused into Paris after their pre-stage presentation in Thoiry.
Pogacar Set for Fifth Title
Tadej Pogacar, who secured the yellow jersey with a dominant attack on the Tourmalet during stage six, is poised to be officially crowned champion for the fifth time. His lead was unassailable after stage 20, where Richard Carapaz won the stage and the polka dot jersey, while Mads Pedersen secured the green jersey and Isaac del Toro took the white jersey.
According to Jeremy Whittle's report from Alpe d'Huez, Pogacar's performance has been exceptional throughout the race. William Fotheringham noted that the stage 21 circuit was extended to include 10km from the top of the Montmartre climb to the finish, favoring Classics specialists.
Stage 21 Preview and Contenders
The final stage, described as having the feel of a spring classic, offers opportunities for riders like Mathieu van der Poel, Mads Pedersen, and possibly Pogacar himself.
