Tom Brady's NFL Return Plans Thwarted by League Over Ownership Conflict
Tom Brady, the legendary quarterback, has disclosed that he recently explored the possibility of making a dramatic return to the NFL as a player, but the league firmly rejected the idea. The primary obstacle stems from Brady's current role as a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, a position that creates a significant conflict of interest under NFL regulations.
League's Stance on Ownership and Playing
In an interview with CNBC Sport this week, Brady, who will turn 49 in August, stated, "I actually have inquired [about a return to playing], and [the NFL] don't like that idea very much." He elaborated that while various options were considered, he is now "very happily retired." A spokesperson for the NFL confirmed that Brady would be required to divest his stake in the Raiders if he wished to resume his playing career, highlighting the league's strict policies on ownership and player eligibility.
Brady's Current Role and Activities
Since his last NFL game in January 2023, a loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Brady has transitioned into multiple roles. He serves as a television analyst for Fox and holds a minority ownership position with the Las Vegas Raiders. Regarding his duties with the Raiders, Brady explained, "I'm a minority owner. So, when you're that, there's really no job description. I don't have really a daily role." He emphasized his commitment to supporting the team's success, adding, "My phone call is always available to everybody who needs it. I want to see everyone succeed, be their best, bring a winning kind of a culture to Las Vegas – to bring the Raiders back to glory. I'd love to be a part of it."
Flag Football Game and Retirement Confirmation
Last weekend, Brady participated in a televised flag football game, where he threw a touchdown pass to receiver Stefon Diggs, demonstrating that he remains in excellent physical condition. However, this experience only reinforced his decision to stay retired. He remarked, "If anything, that game reconfirmed to me that I'm very happy in my retirement." This event showcased his enduring skills but underscored his contentment away from professional play.
Brady's Legendary Career and Records
Tom Brady's career is marked by unparalleled achievements and a ruthless commitment to winning. Even in his final season, he passed for 4,694 yards, ranking third in the NFL, though signs of decline began to emerge. His legacy includes:
- Seven Super Bowl victories, the most by any player in NFL history, with six wins for the New England Patriots and one for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- NFL records for career passing touchdowns (649) and passing yards (89,214).
These accomplishments solidify his status as one of the greatest athletes in sports history, making any potential return a highly anticipated but now unlikely scenario.
