Manchester United have been dealt a significant blow in their search for midfield reinforcements after Aurelien Tchouameni reportedly agreed to a contract extension with Real Madrid. The France international, who joined Los Blancos from Monaco in 2022 for £85 million, is set to commit his future to the Spanish giants until June 2031, according to RMC Sport and The Athletic.
United's midfield search hits another roadblock
The Red Devils had prioritised strengthening their midfield this summer after revamping their attack 12 months ago with the additions of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo for a combined fee of around £200 million. New permanent head coach Michael Carrick has been actively involved in internal discussions regarding potential targets.
United had already missed out on Elliot Anderson, who turned down interest from the club to join Manchester City following an outstanding season at Nottingham Forest. The club also saw Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, both high on their shortlist, move to Tottenham Hotspur within a week. That led United to refocus on Tchouameni, with officials holding exploratory talks to gauge Real Madrid's willingness to sell.
Tchouameni's impact at Real Madrid
Tchouameni, now 26, has made 195 appearances in all competitions for Real Madrid, helping the club win eight trophies including La Liga and the Champions League. He is currently on international duty with France at the World Cup, four years after finishing as a runner-up in Qatar. He has started three of France's five matches against Senegal, Norway, and Sweden, and is expected to feature in the quarter-final against Morocco.
Before joining the France squad, Tchouameni was involved in two heated training ground clashes with Real Madrid teammate Federico Valverde. The second altercation resulted in Valverde being hospitalised with a head injury, and both players were fined €500,000 each.
United's remaining options
Despite wrapping up a £35 million deal with Atalanta for Ederson, United are still looking to bring in another central midfielder before the transfer deadline. With Tchouameni now off the table, the club may need to explore alternative targets. However, the window is closing, and the competition for top midfielders remains fierce.
