Sky Sports legend Jeff Stelling has declared Arsenal the 'clear favourites' to retain the Premier League title, following their dramatic end to a 22-year wait for the trophy last season. The Gunners finished seven points clear of Manchester City, ending a run of three consecutive runners-up finishes, and now face the challenge of defending their crown against a host of improving rivals.
Title triumph and European heartbreak
Arsenal's domestic success was nearly capped with a historic double, as Mikel Arteta's side reached their first-ever Champions League final. However, Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning holders, came from behind to win on penalties at Budapest's Puskas Arena, after Kai Havertz had given Arsenal an early lead. The defeat was a bitter pill, but the Premier League title remains firmly in their grasp.
The club's hierarchy have moved early in the transfer window, securing Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis, while making Piero Hincapie's loan from Bayer Leverkusen permanent. Yet, the summer's biggest ambitions are still to be realised, with reports linking Arsenal to Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes and Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior in blockbuster deals.
Pundits back Arsenal to repeat
talkSPORT pundit Andy Townsend, a former Chelsea and Aston Villa midfielder, believes Arsenal are 'definitely the team to catch' as they prepare to defend their title. Speaking on the same station, he said: 'There's no reason why Arsenal can't do what they did again. There's no reason why, it's not going to be easy. Everybody else is looking to spend big and looking to improve, but I think they are the team to catch, the team to beat.'
Townsend added that even a single 'primetime' signing would make Arsenal even harder to overhaul, acknowledging injury concerns over William Saliba and Declan Rice but insisting every club faces such issues. He concluded: 'I still think they'll be the team to catch, definitely.'
Stelling's verdict on the challengers
Jeff Stelling, now hosting talkSPORT's breakfast show, echoed Townsend's sentiments, naming Arsenal as his frontrunners. He highlighted Bruno Guimaraes as a 'terrific' potential addition and questioned the strength of Arsenal's main rivals. 'Bruno Guimaraes would be a certainty to start and I think he'd be a terrific signing for them,' Stelling said.
'It's foolhardy to say, "We're going to win everything!", at this stage of the season, it's foolhardy in March to say you're going to win everything this season. But this quote from Kai Havertz where he's saying everyone else is getting stronger… where are you seeing that, Kai? Because for me, the challengers are not getting stronger.'
Stelling pointed to Manchester City's new manager Enzo Maresca, Liverpool's uncertainties despite his admiration for Andoni Iraola, and Manchester United's lack of spending as reasons for doubt. He added: 'So at the moment, Arsenal, for me, are the clear, clear favourites in terms of the Premier League but it's a question of what they can do in Europe as well.'
Pre-season preparations and opening fixtures
Arsenal began their pre-season with a 3-0 win over MK Dons and are set to face Real Betis in Dublin, followed by home matches against Borussia Dortmund and Como. Their competitive campaign kicks off with the Community Shield against Manchester City on August 16, before they start their Premier League title defence at home to newly promoted Coventry City five days later.
